Meet the Doctor

Dr. Michael Sparks

Michael S. Sparks, DDS, MS

Hello, New Mexico and Albuquerque Community!

My name is Dr. Michael Sparks and here is just a little background information about myself.

Ever since we moved to Albuquerque in 2006, my wife (Garen) and I have felt so blessed to live and work in the wonderful state of New Mexico: the people, the culture, the food, the weather, to name just a few.  My hobbies include golf, Orange Theory, reading, watching movies, and traveling with my wife.

In 2006, I began private practice in Periodontics in Albuquerque (Albuquerque Perodontics & Implantology) when I assumed ownership one of the oldest specialty practices in Periodontics in the Southwest.  To see New Mexicans achieve and experience the joy and benefits of optimum oral health is my primary goal.  My favorite part of my work is building relationships with my patients and the joy of their final results.

So what is periodontics anyway?  Periodontics is the treatment of conditions affecting the health of the supporting structures of the teeth, including the gums. This includes periodontal gum disease, receding gums, and the replacement of missing teeth with dental implants.

My focus is to provide excellent care and service with state-of-the-art procedures and a team approach.  My team and I continually pursue and stay updated on the latest advances in the rapidly advancing field of dentistry.  We also participate in development programs to help us be excellent listeners and empathetic so that we can support each patient to reduce anxiety and   maximize comfort, safety, and aftercare.  My team and I believe in giving back to the community by volunteering at dental events, donating dental services, and mentoring those in our field.  Finally, my team and I work closely with general dentists and other specialists to lead collaboratively in the field of dental health care for all New Mexicans.

I look forward to meeting you and taking the greatest care of your periodontal needs.

I utilize sedation, including safe IV moderate (conscious) sedation for more complex procedures, as well as oral sedation and nitrous oxide/oxygen sedation.  I use state of the art imagery, as one of the first adopters of Cone Beam CT imaging in the area, as well as electric dental handpieces to provide the most gentle and precise treatment possible.  Regenerative procedures using growth factors and techniques that avoid donor site tissue is another emphasis in my practice.

Now, here is a little about my professional credentials.

In 2004, I graduated with honors in the specialties of periodontics and dental implantology from Baylor College of Dentistry/Texas A&M University.  I received the Merritt-Parks Award in recognition of the most outstanding work done by a senior dental student at Baylor College of Dentistry and the Oral Biology Award from the American Association of Oral Biologists in recognition of significant contribution to oral science.  During my time at Baylor College of Dentistry, I served as an Assistant Professor and an attending periodontist at Children’s Medical Center.  I published several articles and have given numerous lectures in the field of periodontics.

I am a board-certified Diplomate of the American Borad of Periodontology and a fellow in both of the American and International Colleges of Dentistry, an honor that approximately only 1% of dentists achieve through humanitarian service, leadership in dentistry, and ethics.  I served as the President of the New Mexico Dental Association in 2021 and Co-Chair of the New Mexico Mission of Mercy in 2017.  I have been voted numerous times by dental colleagues as the top periodontist/implantologist in the city in Albuquerque The Magazine and have been blessed to treat many physicians, dentists, and specialists in our community as my patients.
